Blind Camper Takes On Camp Adair Challenges

At the end of March Joe, along with 14 other youngsters from the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind were invited to attend the VIP camp hosted by the YMCA’s Camp Adair.

For many Kiwis, camping has been woven into the fabric of our upbringing. For Wendy Sibun, who at 66 is one of the youngest members of the YMCA never2old programme, her recent experience was her first.

YMCA kids dive into boating education

According to Statistics New Zealand, sixty-five percent of Kiwis live near the coast, and New Zealand has 15,000 kilometres of it.  Sadly, Drownbase and Water Safe New Zealand report that as of 2 February, nineteen people have drowned already this year, indicating that the need for education around water and our coastlines is greater than ever.

In a bid to reduce drowning rates, find out how YMCA has partnered with Coastguard Boating Education to deliver education to 165 youngsters.

Her outlook is always positive, and just her presence in the centre livens the gym. Margaret is more than a considerate member; she is a role model in all aspects of life, from perspective to empathy. The whole team looks forward to having Margaret in the centre for many years to come.

Knocking on ninety and still using the gym

Ross uses the gym twice weekly. His training includes a comprehensive cardio and weights programme. 

His advice to other older adults, put bluntly, “get off your backside and do the world some good by being active”. He thoroughly enjoys going to the gym and will continue for as long as he is able.

Steve's advice for other’s, ‘Starting exercise is the hardest part and needs the most motivation. Starting means consistency not just attending the gym once a month. When you have become regular this is when your journey will begin and everything will fall into place. Start at a light intensity to build a strong core foundation’.
