Rules and Regulations for Volleyball

  • Players must be current employees of your company. Only players registered with your team may take the court, or the game is defaulted, i.e. no ring-ins.
  • Games start at the time stated in the draw. Teams not on the court ready to play at that time lose by default. Please be on time. The game consists of 2 x 14-minute halves.
  • The competition is 10 weeks, and games could be played on any day Monday to Friday. Games cannot be transferred or played on another day other than scheduled.
  • Normal volleyball rules apply. This is a mixed social league, and teams are 6 a side. There must be 2 females on the court at all times, and a maximum of 4 males. A team can play with no females if they are short; this will mean that a maximum of 4 males can play. A team with less than 4 players on the court loses by default. A team can play with 1 female and 4 males. This is a social league and we encourage all teams to have the minimum number of females on court also understand that this is a social league and work commitments mean that sometimes this is not possible
  • The ball must be served from the hand.
  • Captains will umpire their own games and record the score at reception.
  • Win = 3 points, Draw = 1 point, Default = 3 points and a score of 20 – 0.
  • If a game is abandoned due to health and safety reasons, then the game will be deemed a 20-all draw.
  • Prizes will be awarded

THE SERVE

( A ) Server must serve from behind the restraining line ( end line ) until after contact.

( B ) Ball may be served underhand or overhand.

( C ) Ball must be clearly visible to opponents before serve.

( D ) Served ball may graze the net and drop to the other side for point.

( E ) First game serve is determined by a volley.

( F ) Serve must be returned by a bump only. no setting or attacking a serve.

SCORING

  1. Rally scoring will be used.
  1. There will be a point scored on every score of the ball.
  1. Offence will score on a defence miss or out-of-bounds hit.
  1. Defence will score on an offensive miss, out of bounds hit, or serve into the net.
  1. Games will be played by a rolling-over score until the full game time is reached.

PLAYING THE GAME ( VOLLEY )

( A ) Maximum of three hits per side.

( B ) Player may not hit the ball twice in succession ( A block is not considered a hit ).

( C ) Ball may be played off the net during a volley and on serve.

( D ) A ball touching a boundary line is good.

( E ) A legal hit is contact with the ball by a player's body above and including the waist which does not allow the ball to visibly come to a rest.

( F ) If two or more players contact the ball simultaneously, it is considered one play and the players involved may not participate in the next play.

( G ) A player must not block or attack a serve.

( H ) Switching positions will be allowed only between front-line players. ( After the serve only ).

BASIC VIOLATIONS

( A ) Stepping on or over the line on a serve.

( B ) Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully.

( C ) Hitting the ball illegally ( Carrying, Palming, Throwing, etc. ).

( D ) Touches of the net with any part of the body while the ball is in play. If the ball is driven into the net with such force that it causes the net to contact an opposing player, no foul will be called, and the ball shall continue to be in play.

( E ) Reaching over the net, except under these conditions:

1 - When executing a follow-through.

2 - When blocking a ball which is in the opponent's court but is being returned ( the blocker must not contact the ball until after the opponent who is attempting to return the ball makes contact). Except to block the third play.

( F ) Reaches under the net ( if it interferes with the ball or opposing player ).

( G ) Failure to serve in the correct order.

( H ) Blocks or spikes from a position which is clearly not behind the 10-foot line while in a back-row position.

Please remember this is a social league and you are self-refereeing the game.

Dangerous play will not be tolerated so play a safe and friendly game.
