As we reach the end of 2025, it feels like the right moment to pause and reflect on a year shaped by connection, creativity and community. From moments that unexpectedly captured national attention to quieter wins that made a real difference day to day, this year reminded us that impact shows up in many forms at The Y North.

One of the most surprising moments came early in the year, when Lorde held a secret acoustic performance in an Auckland City Stadium bathroom. What began as a low-key pop-up quickly travelled far beyond our walls. More than the attention it received, the moment reminded us that our spaces are places where creativity, community and spontaneity can thrive - sometimes in ways no one plans for.

Recreation and fitness continued to be powerful points of connection. Basketball leagues brought people together week after week, pickleball quickly became a favourite across generations, and our fitness spaces supported people at every stage of their journey. Together, these everyday experiences showed how movement can build confidence, routine and connection - especially when people feel welcome and supported.

At Camp Adair, the Te Wairoa River Restoration Project exceeded expectations in its first year. Supported by schools, volunteers and community partners, the project gained momentum quickly. For hundreds of young people, it offered hands-on environmental learning and a deeper connection to the whenua. The strength of the response has been so encouraging, we have plans underway to significantly scale seedling production and extend the impact well into the future.

Our youth development programmes continued to grow, with Raise Up delivering two of its largest flagship events to date. Walk The Line brought over 500 people together to celebrate youth creativity through fashion, while New Found Sound showcased emerging musical talent across Auckland, culminating in a final at The Tuning Fork.

More than the numbers, these events gave rangatahi space to be seen, heard, and supported, often by peers, whānau, and mentors who believe in their potential.

As summer begins, our aquatic centres are already buzzing with families and communities coming together to cool off, connect and kick off a good Kiwi summer. It’s one of the busiest and most rewarding times of the year, and a reminder of how central these shared spaces are to community life across Tāmaki Makaurau and beyond.

2025 has been shaped by the people and communities who show up, support one another and make this work possible. Thank you for being part of it. As we look ahead to 2026, we do so with energy and optimism, excited for what we’ll continue to build together.
