It’s fun to work at The Y!
We are looking for a permanent, part time Camp Chef to take the reins in our camp kitchen at Shakespear Lodge. This is a sole charge role where you will prepare meals, cater to dietary requirements and help us ensure that all our guests have an amazing camp experience! The hours will be on a Seasonal rostered basis and will offer a minimum of 20 hours per week over January to May and October to December, and a minimum of 8 hours per week over June to August. This role is subject to two closedown periods per year of up to 4 weeks at a time subject to bookings.


What will you be doing?

  • Preparing home-style meals for campers based on a pre-planned menu and schedule.
  • Communicating with customers to ensure they receive exceptional service.
  • Catering to dietary requirements e.g. gluten free, dairy free, vegan.
  • Maintaining a clean and tidy kitchen and help to clean the camp.
  • Stocktake, maintaining stock levels, ordering/buying stock.
  • Ensuring a food control plan is maintained.
  • Being self-sufficient in a one-person department and designing systems and processes to make the catering department succeed.
  • Co-ordinating with others to ensure customer and kitchen needs are met. While this is a sole charge role, our instructional team may be around at mealtimes to lend a hand during the school holidays, as well as parents and teachers during the term camps.
  • The sound of laughter, singing and other mealtime activities while our campers enjoy the delicious food you have prepared, with the dining hall located just off the kitchen.

What experience/skills do you need?

  • Confident in cooking simple healthy home cooked meals.
  • Knowledge of special dietary requirements for example allergies and intolerances.
  • Excellent communication skills and a positive can-do attitude.
  • The ability to roll up their sleeves and help keep the workspace and camp clean and tidy.
  • Good skills with emails, spreadsheets, and online ordering systems.
  • Physically active, happy to be on their feet all day and lift/move stock around.
  • A Current Food Hygiene Certificate would be advantageous.
  • Can work efficiently by yourself as this is a one-person department.
  • Confident when speaking to customers.
