Summer. It’s the season of fun in the sun and holidays at the beach. But for working families, summer can also be a long slog spent juggling work and looking after the kids. Community recently caught up with Celeste and Emma, two mothers who work full-time, to discuss the challenges, and how YMCA holiday programmes and camps are helping them survive the summer

For the third year running YMCA has won the Community Excellence Award at the annual NZ Exercise Industry Awards.

There’s no outstepping this flash mob of 45 seniors who stormed Wynyard Quarter on Saturday 25 November with spontaneous dance routines that prove age is no barrier to a bit of fun and exercise. 

Work. Finances. Chores. School routines. With the pressures of daily life it’s little wonder so many Kiwi families struggle to spend quality time together, and the numbers prove it.

For eight years, Niloufer Sultana has faced a number of health challenges, including being diagnosed as pre-diabetic, and suffering from a stroke and three heart attacks. By 2016 Niloufer knew it was time for a lifestyle change. Upon joining the YMCA, she felt she had finally found a place where she was welcome and comfortable enough to work on her health.

YMCA and the Albert-Eden Local Board have received a national Outstanding Event Award from the New Zealand Recreation Association for the annual Albert-Eden Schools Cultural Festival. 

Rose Murphy has been a YMCA member for three years and, in that time, has come a long way from where she started. When Rose joined the gym she weighed 183 kilograms and relied on crutches to be mobile. She made herself a promise that she would never again reach this number, and with determination and support from the YMCA, she gradually lost over 50 kilograms.

Four YMCA trainers and facilities have been named finalists in the upcoming New Zealand Exercise Industry Awards.

YMCA, the family-friendly fitness and recreation provider, is set to showcase its programmes and services for the first time at the NZ Fitness and Health Expo, 28-29 October at the ASB Showgrounds

Seventeen-year-old Zoe Beck has taken out top honours in the Walk the Line fashion show at New Zealand Fashion Weekend on September 2. 

YMCA Auckland will be holding its annual general meeting on Thursday 5 October. All welcome.

A new initiative is helping the South Asian community get active and lower their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, and it’s all thanks to funding provided by Aktive – Auckland Sport & Recreation for YMCA’s Jumpstart programme.
